Dog Cooling Mat: Review After 6 Months
I tested the XL cooling mat with my 32 kg Labrador over six months, from May to October. Daily use, indoors and out, summer heat up to 38 degrees. Here is my full, honest verdict.
First impression: instant adoption
My Labrador Oscar took to the mat on day one. I laid it in his usual corner, next to his old foam bed. He lay down on it naturally and did not move for two hours. The cooling effect is noticeable to the touch: the mat is clearly cooler than the surrounding air, even after 30 minutes of use.
The XL size (100 x 70 cm) is perfect for a dog his size. He can stretch out completely without overhanging. The cover feels pleasant to the touch, smooth but not slippery.
Effectiveness in peak summer (35-38 degrees)
It was during the July heatwave that the mat really proved its worth. With outdoor temperatures of 38 degrees, Oscar was visibly panting in the shade. On the mat, he settled within 5-10 minutes and his panting returned to normal.
I measured the surface temperature with an infrared thermometer: the mat read 25-27 degrees when the air was at 33. The effect lasted around 2-3 hours at a stretch, then the mat needed 20 minutes of rest to recharge. In practice, Oscar would get up to drink or play, and the mat had time to recharge.
Use in the car
The XL mat fits perfectly on the back seat. On a long four-hour summer drive, Oscar stayed calm and relaxed on his mat. Without it, summer journeys were misery: constant panting, restlessness, drool everywhere. The foldable mat stores away easily in the boot.
Upkeep after 6 months
A wipe with mild soap after each outdoor use. Labrador hair — and believe me, there is plenty — does not stick to the cover. A rinse with water and 30 minutes of air-drying once a month for a deeper clean. After six months of daily use, the mat is in perfect condition. No leaks, no visible seam wear, and the gel is as effective as ever.
The good points
- Immediate, effective cooling (-7 degrees measured)
- Instant adoption by the dog, no settling-in period
- Portable everywhere: garden, car, camping
- Ultra-simple upkeep: sponge and water
- No wear after six months of intensive daily use
- Works with no plug, no battery, no water
Room for improvement
- Cooling time limited to 2-3 hours in strong heat (30 degrees plus) — but the 20-minute recharge makes up for it
- The mat slides a little on tiles — adding a non-slip rug underneath solves it
- No machine-washable cover — a quick sponge wipe does the job, though
Verdict: 4.8/5
The XL cooling mat has become a summer essential for Oscar. For under £30, it is an investment that lasts 3-5 years and makes a real difference to a dog's daily comfort. I recommend it without hesitation for any owner of a medium-to-large dog living in a warm area or facing car journeys.
